The Gem has received a 2025 Science on Screen Grant and we are partnering with BAAM to bring you five S.T.E.A.M. events centered around the senses: Taste, Smell, Sound, Sight, and Touch. This event is our fourth event in the series – it’s time to STOP and find out how tracking dogs smell out a target!

Please join us Saturday, June 14th, at 3:30pm. We welcome Lindsay Ware and her conservation scent detection dogs to The Gem for a presentation called “Sniffing Out Science.” Lindsay will bring one or two of her scent detection dogs to do an outdoor demonstration & talk. Following the presentation, we will show the GKIDS film Wolfwalkers.

Lindsay Ware is a conservation dog trainer who, in 2018, decided to combine two of her passions – conservation biology and dog training – to found Science Dogs of New England. What started as an interest in helping hunters track game has grown into a range of dog-powered work that comprises conservation detection, including helping scientists find – and, ultimately, protect – rare turtles. Lindsay lives in Ellsworth, Maine, and has four working dogs – two dedicated to tracking game animals and two trained in conservation scent detection.

In her presentation, Lindsay will demonstrate the incredible way dogs use their sense of smell to track down specific targets. A conservation dog can be trained to sniff out a rare species of plant or animal. One popular application is training dogs to find animal scat – biologists can find amazing information in scat – DNA, diet, hormones – it’s a goldmine to researchers. The dogs can also be trained to find small elusive animals that are camouflaged in the natural world. Lindsay and her labrador, Chili Bean, and her Australian Shepherd, Delta, currently spend most of their time tracking down rare wood turtles as part of the Maine Wood Turtle Project.

Wolfwalkers Film Synopsis: A young apprentice hunter and her father journey to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night.

Sound baths are vibrational healings with tones generated by crystal sound bowls that penetrate every part of your body, unblocked by material barriers. During a sound bath, I implement crystal singing bowls in synchrony with guided meditation, reanchoring processes, a vintage Burmese gong, an Ocean Drum and vocal toning. The tones and songs for each event are conducted uniquely and specific to an individual or group.

I am so grateful & honored to say that I have decades of experience working with clients as a Certified Reiki, Master NLP practitioner, Timeline Therapist and Registered Dental Hygienist. On Thursday, July 10, the Points North Institute will host its annual CIFF Summer Party at the Strand Theatre in Rockland featuring a screening of the acclaimed Sundance 2025 documentary, Middletown from filmmakers Jesse Moss & Amanda McBaine, followed by a Q&A with special guests. The event is a fundraiser for the 21st edition of the Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) and will also feature live music and a sneak peek of trailers for films screening the festival in September.

The Points North Institute will host its annual CIFF Summer Party on Thursday, July 10 at the Strand Theatre in Rockland, featuring a screening of the acclaimed documentary Middletown and a live Q&A with Fred Isseks, the inspirational teacher at the heart of the film. This celebratory event marks the unofficial kickoff to the 21st Camden International Film Festival (CIFF), taking place September 11–14, 2025.

In addition to the screening, the evening will include live music, a sneak peek of trailers from the upcoming CIFF program, and insight into Points North’s year-round work supporting independent documentary artists. Tickets are $35 and include a complimentary drink. Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the program will begin at 6:30 PM.

Middletown tells the story of a group of teenagers in upstate New York who, guided by their unconventional high school teacher, Fred Isseks, created a student film in the early 1990s that exposed a shocking environmental conspiracy poisoning their town. Thirty years later, they revisit their project, confront the impact of their discovery, and reflect on how one educational experience shaped their lives. The film is both a riveting political exposé and a moving tribute to mentorship, curiosity, and civic courage.

“Our Summer Party is a chance for our local community to come together around powerful and entertaining storytelling—and to get an early glimpse at the energy and direction of this year’s festival,” said Elise McCave, Executive Director of Points North Institute. “We’re thrilled to feature Middletown, which plays like Erin Brockovich meets The Breakfast Club—it’s bold, sharp, and unexpectedly moving. And we’re honored to welcome Fred Isseks for what promises to be a very special evening.”

The Summer Party serves as a fundraiser for CIFF and the artist programs that Points North runs throughout the year, which bring together filmmakers from around the world to develop new work and build lasting creative networks.

The 21st edition of the Camden International Film Festival will take place in Camden and Rockland, Maine, from September 11-14, 2025. More than sixty films from across the world will be presented, alongside keynote presentations, panel discussions, and other special events. Founded in 1998, the Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) is a project of the Maine Film Center. The 10 days of the festival showcase nearly 100 films, representing the best of American independent and international cinema, and spotlight some of Maine and New England’s most exciting and innovative filmmakers.

Enjoy spectacular video clips of virtuoso performances by opera's greatest stars. Hosted and annotated by John Curtis in the historic setting of the Old Village School. The program aims to gratify both opera aficionados and those new to the genre. The Fun with Opera series is presented free of charge as a public and educational service by the Old Surry Village School Preservation Group.

The Playhouse at Waterville Station is pleased to present a Peace of Forest, the first-ever feature length wildlife movie filmed and produced in Maine. Although a Peace of Forest is touted as a quiet film, it has a loud message that is being heard at sold-out screenings.
