If you live in Maine, there's a good chance you live near one — or more — land trust.

The purchase expands a contiguous protected area along the Kezar River.

Officials from the towns of Cumberland, North Yarmouth and the two land trusts that manage the Knights Pond Preserve are suggesting ways to keep the public safe after a family dog was shot and killed by a hunter there last Friday.

The Conservation Fund has purchased the land near Jackman and the Canadian border for roughly $44 million.
