"Climate Change Indicator #14: Tarpon Season Opens in Maine" by Benjamin Pochurek
"This sculpture represents the rising temperatures in the North Atlantic's water. Having myself migrated from Florida to Maine, I believe that artistically depicting my favorite southern fish's migration to our waters illustrates the great risk of climate change. Additionally, I decided to construct the piece out of found metal and debris to symbolize pollution's impact on aquatic life." — Benjamin Pochurek
The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance’s would like to recognize Benjamin Pochurek for the Excellence in STEM award. Benjamin's fish sculpture is a feat of engineering with close attention paid to accurately depicting the anatomy of a tarpon. What we most love about this project is that it weaves together skill, creativity, a tangible example of climate change, and Benjamin's own story. MMSA's Reach project seeks to connect Maine youth and their families with fun, authentic ways to engage in science, technology, engineering, and math. Visit mmsa.org
